Book Announcement

I am pleased – and relieved – to announce that my book, Strategy from the Inside Out, will be available soon. After several years of writing, months of simmering, and several rounds of edits, I have what I believe is an alternative approach to strategy that is sensitive to the unique characteristics of the nonprofit sector. Peter Brinckerhoff was kind of enough to write the foreword for the book. For that, I am eternally grateful.

My impetus for writing the book was part curiosity and part frustration. Beginning with the latter, I have encountered far too many nonprofits struggling with the development of strategy. The main culprit, in my opinion, is that they were attempting to shove the proverbial square peg into the round hole. The reality is that traditional approaches to strategic planning were not developed with the nonprofit in mind. My own curiosity fueled me to try and find a better way.

The book will be self-published through Create Space, meaning that you can order directly from Amazon.com once it is completed. I shopped my idea around to a few publishers before going the route of self-publication. The responses were generally favorable, but it was clear that I was trying to work my way into a crowded field of strategic planning books. It must be what indie singer/songwriters experience trying to grab the attention of a major record label.

Whether I sell ten copies or ten million, the book was something I felt I needed to do for myself. It is amazing how writing about something reveals the holes in your thinking. The process of putting my thoughts together has made me a better consultant.

Look for excerpts from the book on this site over the next few months.
